Slightly misquoting Michael Moore there. He goes a bit far sometimes. His views are very very extreme. But darn it, he is right about some things and at least he is actively trying to make a difference even if he gets kinda mean, sarcastic, gross, and crosses the line.

Daryl gave my husband a copy of Downsize This for me to read. I don't know why - probably because we've argued about some cause in the past or maybe he was just being Daryl.

Anyway, there's a chapter in there asking why doesn't GM just sell crack cocaine. If profit is supreme and companies have a responsibility to their shareholders to do anything to make a profit, he argues, they should just sell crack. At least it doesn't polute the environment. Free market! But if we have rules against selling crack and rules against unsafe working conditions, minimum wage, Social Security etc to protect the general public than why can't we have a rule that prohibits corporations from closing profitable factories/businesses and moving them overseas w/o paying reparations to the community they are leaving behind. In a divorce a spouse is entitled to compensation for sacrifices that allowed the other to get wealthy (wife put husband through school so he could get a high paying job, for example). So the company community marriage should get the same. He also suggested that executive salaries not be more than 30x greater than employees and that executives not get bonuses from monies earned by firings.

That does make sense, darn it.

Warning: This argument is good for conservatives, not libertarians--libertarians are generally pro-drug legalization so they don't think there should be laws against selling crack either.
