watching me watching you

Guess who's gonna be a Neilson family?!?!?!?!?! Yep!!! Us!!! For a week, at least. I shouldn't be so excited except we watch a lot of television and have been heartbroken to lose shows like Firefly, Wonderfalls, Head Cases, Futurama, the Tick while week after week things like the OC just keep coming. Maybe, just maybe, we can make a difference in a very unimportant way. If nothing else I can validate USA/TNT/Bravo's non-stop Law and Order airings...

In other news, we had a great reading group meeting tonight!! It all started years ago after the first Lord of the Rings movie. In the theatre parking lot my husband and I shared that neither of us had ever read the books and as my friend Charity and droidgirl 's brother hadn't read them in years we decided to go through them together, each taking on different characters and alternating houses to share the responsibility of cooking dinner. We even made a cookbook of recipes from our gatherings called Lord of the Table, One Spoon To Serve Them All. Along the way Charity picked up a husband and Driodgirl returned home from college. We've finished all the LOTR, two Harry Potters, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Much Ado About Nothing. We are currently reading a book DG's brother cowrote that really ought to be published, it's that good. We're actually recording ourselves reading it to send to the primary author so he can make changes/revisions if he feels it necessary. Anyway, I'm usually pretty shy about talking aloud so this is good practice for me. And I am VERY proud to say that for the first time ever in our history the tape recording was stopped so that everyone could laugh and actually applaud an exchange between my husband's and my characters. It was a very well written and comedic passage in the midst of some tense political drama and intrigue, so it was actually pretty easy to get into the part (my character was upset that she had nothing fancy to wear to a formal dinner party so I got to pitch a temper tantrum). But even with that, I got a lot of praise for pulling off the spat with such flourish and animation and Charity even requested a copy of that particular tape. That made my night!

ps Toaster - what did your posting do to the cats of the world? Cassie is running back and forth non-stop through the house mewing. Artimus is on a diet so I understand her running around is to make us put more food in her cat dish but Cassie is just in an unexplained tizzy.

What's a Neilson family?

I feel like I never get what's going on.... LOL

don't feel bad - when they called they were very "explainy" and the packet of information was all about who they are, etc. so maybe their name isn't as well known today. my generation got it beaten into us. i keep forgetting you're like ten years younger than me!! LOL!

those are the television ratings people. like when they say NBC is the most watched network or that Numbers got 35% of the viewers, its all based on the people Neilson surveyed. but it's how companies decide where they want their ads (popular with teens? lets do an acne commercial!) and networks decide to keep or cancel shows so they are pretty powerful.

we are supposed to write down everything we watch from this thursday to next wednesday and send the "diary" back. if we have visitors over they get to be in the diary, too :)

Tell them to make Firefly come back... I'm on the last disc of the damn set and I want more. *pout*

yea i hated putting the last disk in .... because i knew ther was no more after that ..... it's sad!
same with x-files ..... i've seen every episode up until the very last one of season 7 ..... that's when things changed ...... i have all of them ...... just putting off watching the rest ....

sigh ..... geeks will be geeks

I wish there were a show I liked right now so that I could tell you to watch it for me.

My Uncle Bill (actually my godfather) got to be a Nielson family for two weeks. He was so excited; he couldn't wait to watch PBS the whole time and show those Nielson folks that not all Americans were uncultured morons who would watch any old crap the networks put on. Unfortunately, his wife's parents came to visit for the entirety of the second week and watched nothing but soap operas and game shows. He was so disappointed!

well if you think of one, let me know. i've got all next week :)

you're uncle is brilliant! i ought to watch more PBS than normal this week but our PBS station is not as good as some of the ones i've seen. i like the Mystery and Masterpiece Theatre and hosts of British comedies but half the time our station won't show them.

i do want to take a stab against soap operas and most reality television, though! (although there are a few reality shows i do love, so i can't rail to loudly against them...)

cool ..... you putting us in? =)
or can you not mention stuff you don't see off of tv (like movies on dvd)?
Jun. 28th, 2006 12:08 pm (UTC)
heck yeah! you can even write it in the book yourself if you like!
Jun. 27th, 2006 10:35 am (UTC)
Hurray! I can't believe one of US gets to be a Nielson family. About damned time. Props to DG brother having something he cowrite read out loud. I would not have the balls for that.

we had to get used to it in the creative writing class but it was anaomous (sp) so it wasn't nearly as bad. to be read aloud by friends and to be tape recorded - that's guts. but i cannot rave enough about the story. it better get published so i can talk to people about it in detail!!! LOL!

and i'm so stupid excited about the neison thing it's not funny. sigh. such a loser am I!!!!

I wonder if you do it once, if they ask you to do it again sometime...

It would be cool to be on their "list" of people to ask to do the rating things.
Jun. 27th, 2006 05:50 pm (UTC)
It's supposed to be a random sample, so you only get to do it more than once if the computer picks you again by accident.
