then i have a question for you... can you control a friends list so that i can always see all the friends but viewers of my journal only see some of them?

so i'm playing around with livejournal - i'm considering getting a paid account because sp4z26 has really been enjoying hers. but i figure before i get a paid one i'll mess around and see what a free one will do since i haven't really done anything with mine.

i've changed my layout, i think it's lots clearer but kinda boring. i prefer my older friends page but don't want to lose the clean neat lines and better font of the new journal. (i was too impatient to keep setting up html codes to modify the font on my original layout.) i suppose with the paid account i'd have more options and this would be a moot point so i ought to just get one and stop playing around. i'm afraid i'll get one and still not explore the features so i'm gonna make myself keep at this free one for a bit.

but i can't figure out the friends page. i wanted to try to make it so that anyone who's reading it wouldn't have to sift through communities or this science feed i just joined. so i tried creating custom groups and doing the friends filter. i thought it meant i could control who OTHER people view on my flist (friends list?) but that I would still be able to see everyone. but what it did was stop the communities from appearing on the list in general - me and others. is what i'm wanting to do not possible? i am technopathetic. i've tried reading the FAQs but am not getting it.

I think as long as your friends' journals are public you can't control other people reading them.

i friended this really cool thing called science blog but it posts a million little things to my friends page so it sort of overwhelms it. all the real people get drowned out in a see of "new stars" and "soy products cause fruitbats to get pregnant". i like reading my friends friend pages sometimes because you can meet interesting people that way. i thought if anyone else was reading mine they might find it too distracting so i want to partition it off from the other posts so they won't get so inundated by it.

thank you for answering!

Hmm.. you have a good point. Sometimes some of the things we 'friend' can take over. But personally, I like looking at other peoples friends pages to see what they are reading, and what type of things they are interested in. I don't mind it. But it can be distracting.

the science blog was posting like mad - ten or fifteen at a time so it felt like kudzu. but it was really interesting stuff. oh well.
