Would You Like Fries with That?

I don't get to go to lunch this semester because I'm using my lunch hour to take a class. I was hoping I'd lose weight – not really working. But I am getting used to it and am not usually too starving at the end of the day anymore so I'm surviving just fine.

Yesterday one of my coworkers decided to surprise me by picking up an extra burger from McDonalds for me so I'd have something to eat that day. But when I unwrapped it there was a bite out of it! I laughed and asked her if it was hers, expecting her to switch. I figured she'd started eating in the car or something. But she was horrified and said it wasn't her. I showed it around the office and everyone agreed the burger looked bitten and ordered me to call McDonalds to complain. I did call, but didn't complain because I used to work at McDonalds when I was in high school and I know how crazy it can get sometimes. I just calmly explained it looked like there was a bite out of my burger and it creeped me out so I was calling to ask what could be done about it. The lady on the phone argued that there was no way they'd sell a burger with a bite out of it, but if I could come back she have a replacement for me. She actually remembered the order. When I got there I was expecting an argument so as the person at the counter was unwrapping it I was explaining that it wasn't just me that thought it looked bitten and I'm sure no one here would bite it but it was still creepy. She cut me off mid-explanation to ask if this was how it looked when I unwrapped it, that I didn’t do anything to it. I said yes and she said she totally agreed with me that it looked bitten! It was awesome. She actually looked disgusted. I wasn't even disgusted, I was just amused and unwilling to eat it so I wanted a replacement. She tossed it in the trash with a vengeance, went to cash register and fiddled with something, returned with a bag, and asked if I had fries. I had fries and other than being cold from all the waiting there was nothing wrong with them but she replaced them anyway. Then she handed me two coupons for free meals. I was elated! This was much more than I expected. When I got back to the office I handed off the fries to people that appreciate them more than me and discovered – dun dun dun – they'd put in TWO replacement burgers. (Both unbitten!!) It was awesome. It was like trick-or-treating for fast food.

Good for going back! I can't imagine someone who works at McDonald's ACTUALLY taking a bite of a burger and then selling it to a costumer! And I guess they threw in a little extra because you weren't one of those incredibly whiny customers they often get complaining.

I hate to be the voice that brings this to the conversation, but you have no idea what happens to your food before you get it. Or if you send it back for that matter.

Just trust me when I say that unless it is a 5 star restaurant, don't even think about sending food back to have it recooked. Steaks, for example - I have seen them nuked, deep fried or just left to sit under the lamp to dry out and get yucky when the complaint is underdone. And this from "professionals"... imagine what Joe McMinimum Wage can do to your food...

Makes you want to not eat out again...ever.

I've never been able to manage skipping meals. Gotta eat! Plus snacks (though healthier ones than when I was younger).
