CassieCat Cassiopeia got put in the vet’s today because for the last three days her tail has been hanging oddly. Today she was fine. She was swishing it around and flopping on the floor as usual, but we took her in anyway since we had the appointment, switching it to a checkup.

It is *really* weird seeing a cat’s tail hang in the same position for three days. The first day we just thought, “That’s odd. Wonder if she’s depressed” The second day we thought, “That’s really odd; what if it’s broken!?!?” and made an appointment. Tuesday and Wednesday she was overly cautious jumping up on things, she didn’t flail around on the floor like she usually does, she didn’t twitch her tail (in fact, she didn’t move it at all, it was resoundingly down), and while she always mewed excessively, her mews seemed different and more concerned. It was very strange, because for the life of me I couldn’t remember what her tail normally *did*…but I knew that it was certainly *not* what she was doing now, and it felt uber creepy.

It was a huge relief seeing her more upbeat this morning. Monkeys and I were laughing madly at her reaction to being in the carrier. Actually, I was laughing at both her and Monkeys, because his attempts at counterbalance to her sudden psychoreaction to being lifted was hysterical.

I emailed Tickmosis at work giving her an update, and she told me about one of her cats having an abscess/infection in his tail, which was fixed with antibiotics. I emailed back wondering if one of those evil bluejays that swoop down on our cats could have pecked such an injury. Later that afternoon, Monkeys called me after he picked Cassie up and said... she had an abscess/infection which the vet said could have been caused by a bug bite. He asked her if it could be caused by a bird attack (great minds!), and she said yes! When I got home she was curled up on our bed purring like Starbucks coffee grinder - rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. She's sitting behind me now as I type. :)

Work! Registration is going fairly smoothly! Yay! I will only have two late nights in the process! Double Yay!! The graduation ceremony is on Cinco de Mayo – I’m sad about the date as I will miss getting Mexican food and miss my first class on the Rosary, but I’m excited about the ceremony. It’s outdoors, which is always more stressful because 1) weather concerns and 2) more difficult to control the marching in/sitting down. It’s also our biggest graduating class, so that makes it more complicated. I can’t wait for the rush and the excitement. One of my former students is graduating this term!! But I’m also really looking forward to Wednesday when it’s all over. Of course, Wednesday begins the real work of actually reviewing folders for graduation. I’ll be shut up in my office feeling guilty about not helping out with the counters and worrying about the bachelors offices calling me asking why am I not doing my usual job. It is a real shame that the timing for this stuff is always terrible. The end of the semester and the beginning of a new semester always overlap – so we have to do graduation reviews during registration. It’s like having two natural disasters hit at once. Throw in the graduation ceremony on top of that (which only happens in the spring) and it’s like Godzilla suddenly showing up in the middle of a hurricane/volcano combo. It’s also quite exciting – woot! Bring it on!!

Also exciting, but in a bad way… Our college is going through some major turmoil right now – including a shooting (non school related, a coke vender was being stalked by a disgruntled former employee) and some other press issues. That’s on top of all the concerns over educational budget cuts. It’s a challenging time right now. I’m going to call the emotional disturbances Mothra, since like Godzilla I’m hoping they are a one-off “disasters” and not a seasonal disaster. That and it feels like we're being attacked by monsters.

Ohhhh!! So maybe *that's* why she was acting so weird last weekend and hissing at nothing!

Plus, that same night, she was fighting with something in the yard and she ran inside *very* pissed off and covered in dust. I think someone saw another cat in the yard... it could have bitten her. Or it could have definitely been the birds! They get downright *mean* sometimes!

I had the coolest thing happen at work today! i didn't want to write about it because the funeral procession was so emotional that posting my OMG story didn't seem appropriate :)
