Hold the day!

As my husband *never* uses his Livejournal, I feel safe posting this here.

Keep September 13th free! In honor of his 42nd birthday I am doing a Hitchhikers theme, so if you don't already own a robe and pajamas you have a month to get something together. Yes, a prize will be given for best robe/towel/pajama combination.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to contribute. I have already made up some games (if you want to participate in the Vogon poetry writing competition let me know - I will get you the rules in advance so you can prepare) and started on creating decorations, but I welcome more ideas. I'm so excited!

EDIT: Since a couple of people have mentioned I'm baiting fate posting about the party... He knows it's a hitchhikers theme (he actually requested the theme) so don't worry if you accidently say anything vague about H2G2 to him. He even knows about towels and robes as that's an obvious thing. Just no specific details to him, please. :) :) :)

Thanks! I've been having a blast thinking up theme foods, decorations, and party favors. I even wrote a trivia game - ha! (It's kind of a dumb trivia game, but I had fun writing it, so I'm hoping it will go over well...)

Oh, I hope you didn't jinx yourself with that first sentence... ;)

I did warn him to stay away from my journal - just in case. As he knows turning 42 pretty much mandates a Hitchhikers Guide birthday that's not going to be much of a surprise anyway, but the surprise will be in the details. At least, that's my hope!

Belgium, man, Belgium!!
(you should get some Belgian beer)
Ummmm... have you employed some Dentrassis to cater the event? I certainly hope not.

You may be able to find some gummi Babelfish somewhere in your local grocery store. I would recommend beginning the party by having everyone insert one into their ear to prevent any miscommunication. If real ones are unavailable I'd recommend using a lemon gumdrop.

watch your language, mister! i'm a lady!
Belgian beer is a good idea. I'll have to hit the World Market or something.

I haven't hired Dentrassis, but I'm working on getting Disaster Area to play for us!!!!

Swedish fish! I saw an idea on line where someone made party favor "to go bags" with Swedish Fish that said So Long and Thanks for all the Fish on the outside. I'm probably going to steal that idea. Otherwise I've been surprised and disappointed how few H2G2 party ideas are posted out there.

On my own I got some Goldfish crackers and am going to try to make some kind of vending machine out of cardboard and markers to spoof that puzzle from the Infocom game. It won't actually work like the game, but I want the idea represented.

Make your own Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster! Design Your Own Planet!

Definitely having PanGalactic Gargle Blasters! I also want to try to make a mock Babel Fish dispenser (using Goldfish crackers) and not-tea dispenser based on the ones from the Infocom game. I've been searching through the books for other food ideas, but he mentions restaurants more than he does specific foods, so instead I think I'm just going to make a sign that says "Milliways" above the food table and put out whatever kind of food I like. One of my friends gave me a bunch of gellato (sp?) spoons that look like shovels, so I was going to spread hummus out on a tray to look like the Vogon planet from the recent movie and have shovels all over it. (I will have to trust my friends to not have ideas, lest the shovels jump up and hit them on their heads...)

Well, there's always the Dish of the Day!

I like the Design your Own Planet idea a lot. I was thinking about having a table set up as a station to write your own page to the Guide (paper, crayons, markers, glue, etc). Perhaps instead I'll have a Make Your Own Planet station, instead. Must think about this...

Yes, I must figure a way to work the Dish of the Day into it. I've got a trivia question relating to it, at least. I should be able to get it on the table. So far, all I've got are peanuts (you need them after the matter transference), goldfish/Swedish fish, cheese sandwiches (infocom game) and other sandwiches (Arthur worked at a Sandwich shop), tea, and (of course) the Gargle Blaster.

And finally, because there is a Don't Panic icon option... MLR doesn't have one and regretted it with this post.

It's a darn shame that MLR is so tired she can't think of anything clever to say or do with Toastr's sign in. Seems like such a waste. Sigh. I could cause such chaos and disorder, yet all I am doing is leaving random, stupid messages in my LJ. Sad, sad, sad.

So wish I could be there with you all - it sounds like such a great theme and I was so impressed with Matthew's birthday theme (especially the pinata "full of stars"); I wish I was around all you wonderful creative funky friends. Miss you all so much.
