Joy in the Morning

I list the books I've read over in my child_of_orion account but I had to post this here because it gives me a chance to use my Roosevelt icon...

I just finished Joy (Jeeves) In the Morning and this section cracked me up... It's a rich "what what what" shipping magnate explaining why it's so hard to deal with jumpy American businessmen:

"...Can you account for it? No? I can. Too much coffee."
"Coffee?"
"That and the New Deal. Over in America, it appears, life for the business man is one long series of large cups of coffee, punctuated with shocks from the New Deal. He drinks a quart of coffee, and gets a nasty surprise from the New Deal. To pull himself together, he drinks another quart of coffee, and along comes another nasty surprise from the New Deal. He staggers off, calling feebly for more coffee, and... Well you see what I mean. Vicious circle. No nervous system could stand it."

So clever and convoluted it could have been written by Groucho Marx!! I get the same sense of love for Wodehouse's words as my Marxist friends. Okay, I promise I'll shut up now. At least in this journal I'll stop...
