utopia and CERT training

Still going through the know-it-all book.

I'm assuming I bookmarked the section on Charles Fourier because Jacob's description of the ocean=lemonade/cabbage cultivating/opera singing utopia sounded kinda fun and I always appreciate the crazy. But the socioeconomic doctrines and reform movements section also ended with a somber reflection on how Mr. Jacobs, like me, often tries to lose himself in the American abundence is abundent lifestyle. After reading entry after entry about all the countries in the world who are struggling with disease and starvation and war and short life-spans it made it harder to shield his eyes from the fact that the world needs help. I'm not doing much about that.

I just signed up for CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). I'll learn how to do basic first aid and health assessment, basic fire fighting, basic search and rescue, and other stuff that would mean I can help after a hurricane or other disaster, especially when the goverment is so overwhelmed or otherwise blocked they can't get there right away. The program came about partially due to the idea that people want to help but can actually do more damage than good if they aren't properly trained. ("Following the Mexico City earthquake where untrained, spontaneous volunteers saved 800 people. However, 100 people lost their lives while attempting to save others.") I have no idea how to operate a fire extinguisher! How incompentent is that? Just imagine how useless I would be if something happened right now. So I'm excited! It's still not helping the world, but it could help locally.

And I looked up Charles Fourier in Wikipedia, admittedly not as trustworthy a source as the Brittanica, but he didn't seem nearly as crazy in their biography. Darn.
