is the tattoo i want to get. want to get it soooooo badly i can taste it. it's a scan of Toaster's bag. i have been searching for YEARS for an image of a hydrogen atom that sang to me. if i did a bohr model it would just look like a target. but if i got that atomic warning symbol it wouldn't really look like hygrogen. i can't tell you how many pictures i searched through. i started considering maybe a carbon atom and giving up on hydrogen (it was much less targety looking and being a carbon based creature seemed a decent second choice). but it didn't have the same meaning. then in a "stop looking and love will come to you" kind of way Toaster picked up up a Fossil bag on our Foley Adventure and there it was. i think i can add an electron to one of these orbits and BAM! the building block of the universe. (or BANG! the buliding block of the universe...)

EDIT: Long and boring and you don't have to read...

Ha! Got to do a Marx Brothers reference! Since Redd once asked why an atom - I have always been a fan of astronomy and science. I read every book on astronomy in my elementary school library. Throughout all my school years that continued - though I seemed to be jinxed in the chem lab it remained my favorite class. (I had a dream that my chemistry teacher took me to the side and suggested I join chorus...) So maybe I didn't become a scientist but I am truly awed by what all there is out there to know and by what all man his figured out. The fact you can say if i have xx grams of hydrogen and xx moles of oxygen I could mathematically compute how much water could be made and what H and O will be left over is insane. So it was always an idea in the back of my head. But building on all that I was struck by the imagery and ideas in a paragraph I had posted much earlier http://madladyred.livejournal.com/14446.html (copied below) plus other books talking about how the heavier elements formed from Hydrogen in those stellar furnices. So pretty much everything in the universe came from hydrogen under heat and pressure morphing into other elements. This is probably the most poetic references to that, though...

"Many of the heavy elements created during the stellar processing, and others created during the explosion itself, are dispersed into the interstellar medium, and some of this “stardust” is incorporated in gas that collapses to form another star somewhere else. Over billions of years later generations of stars – so-called Population 1 stars, like our Sun – form, and any number of these can be surrounded by a swirling disk of gas and dust, which could coalesce to form planets containing heavy elements like calcium, carbon, and iron. Out of this stuff we are made. Every atom in our bodies was created billions of years ago, in the fiery furnace of some long dead star. I find this one of the most fascinating and poetic facts about the universe: we are all literally star children."

The Physics of Star Trek by Lawrence M Krauss, Page 122

I was talking about this with Toaster, maybe on the way to mass last week? I do believe science and religion can coexist. Two sides of the same coin. So we are built from star dust, we come from hydrogen. But I'm still a Daughter of Eve :)

Add your electron, and I'd get this tatoo tomorrow if you like. =o) I've got a place all picked out and everything. Where are you going to put it? Your ankle?
May. 14th, 2007 02:09 am (UTC)
where is the place?!?!?

yeah, i was talking to John. i'd really like it in the "typical girl" lower back thing BUT
1) i couldn't see it
2) unless i lost weight i wouldn't show anyone else
3) if i am having back problems probably shouldn't get a tattoo there! LOL!!

so we are thinking the ankle is the place.

and i want to get Orion on the back of my neck.
and i want a Celtic Cross
and i want the power of three
and i want sarah's family ivy

Just call me Lydia!!

I'm getting it on the inside of my ankle. Opposite of the other one. Reddheaded on one side, Madlady on the other. =o)

THEN, I have to find a place to put that power of 3 symbol we all want... Hmm......

YAY!!! this weekend would give John time to work on cleaning up the image. are you going to get it, too?!?!?! for real?!?

does the ankle hurt a lot? you said yours hit a nerve??? i HOPE i do not flake. i will make it through this one, once you get started you can't stop, right? i'm just concerned about the 8 billion others i want to get...
May. 14th, 2007 03:48 am (UTC)
Heck yeah I'm getting it too!
Yes, Ankle hurts. ANYWHERE hurts.
But no, not a nerve, it was just right near the bone at one point. That was not pleasant. Yours isn't as long as the first one I got, so you should have that problem.

Do you want to go first? Or do you want me too?
May. 14th, 2007 12:29 pm (UTC)
me first.
and maybe you should bring a pointed stick .

not so much because of me!me!me!me!
but to make sure that i don't chicken out.
i seriously don't think i will because i really really want this
but i think getting it done the sooner the better is in order

OHOHOH - i can use my May GARF money on it!!! Huzzah!!
i want the proton red like in your picture and the electron either blue or green.

will i need to clean up the picture? like remove the texture of the background?

if not this week than this weekend??!?!?!?!?!
would i be able to function at work tomorrow? you know i'm whiney... and a wuss!

Go tattoo go!
Now that I have 3, I know that I want 2 more - you'd never think they're addictive, but they ARE.
I say do it.
Jim's audio engineering company (his freelance gig) is Sweet Atom Pie sound design. www.sweetatompie.com
Which comes from 2 sources / he's a science freak too, but it actually comes from him misunderstanding the title of the Elliot Smith song "Sweet Adeline".
I say DO it.
May. 14th, 2007 02:55 am (UTC)
we're setting up an appointment for this Saturday!! YAY!!!
i didn't know you have three!
what are they??

Jim is the coolest :) Some how, some where, some when i think we must have been related.

my favorite messed up song lyric (montegreen?) is that i used to think in the song from Flashdance that the line "Take your passion and make it happen" was "Take your pants down and make it happen"
May. 14th, 2007 02:25 am (UTC)
Yep yep yep!!
Get John to clean it up and get it as clear as possible.

Do you want it to be exactly like the picture with the orbits trailing off and everything? Cuz the tattoo person will make a copy of what you give them, then transfer it in blue ink onto your bodypart, then they'll just copy it exactly as it is.

Anytime baby! Would you want to do it next weekend?
May. 14th, 2007 02:34 am (UTC)
yeah, i want it EXACTLY like the picture with the asymatry (sp) and the thick/thin/fading out orbit lines. just need to add an electron - no other changes.

john said we could go to the brazilian place next weekend!! when are you playing? we can work around those for the tattoo and for the movie :) Shrek comes out next weekend.

i would pick tattoo over movie if the gang wouldn't revolt over it.... but hopefully i can pull off all three.

I'm so excited for you. The ankle isn't... THAT bad. When they hit a bone it's not too fun but you'll be fine. I'm so tickled to hear you and disbandedtoastr talk about getting the ivy. Just tickled to death. I wouldn't do it in the small of the back for one reason..... it's a waist of valuable skin. Something that small needs to be on a small area. :) I know, I'm wierd.
May. 17th, 2007 12:18 pm (UTC)
hi!!! i have ALWAYS wanted to get the family tattoo ever since you showed it to us.

but it is so hard to decide where to put these things!! i was thinking maybe the ivy could go on my arm (like below the shoulder where a lot of people get tattoos - and maybe even do a band around the rest of my arm, like those bracelet tattoos. some celtic knotwork thing. i don't know!)

it's so hard to decide!!!

toaster's getting the atom on the inside of her ankle opposite the one she and jamie have with a band sort of interconnecting them. i can't wait to see how that looks. it may help me decide where to put the ivy - LOL :)
